COUNCIL BLUFFS — Molly Bryan and McKena Duffek each worked like they were on a deadline.
Turns out they were.
The starting softball pitchers for Glenwood and Lewis Central, respectively, submitted sparkling performances in what was supposed to be a doubleheader at L.C. on Thursday evening. The Iowa Class 4-A No. 7 Rams edged the Titans 1-0 in the opener before thunderstorms forced a postponement of the second game to a date to be determined.
“It’s always some big games for both schools,” Lewis Central coach Don Wittstruck said. “It’s nice to see each team play that hard.”
Both hurlers turned in impressive outings to help the first contest beat the rain. Bryan, a senior, struck out 10 batters while allowing just four hits. Duffek, an eighth grader, held the visitors to six hits and fanned eight.
The Rams (17-1, 7-1 Hawkeye Ten Conference) cobbled together a mini rally in the fourth inning. Singles from McKenna Henze and Jaelin Stanton set up catcher Bailey Starner, who ripped a two-out double into left-center field for the evening’s only score.
Lewis Central (12-10, 3-6) had its best chance in the sixth when Makenna Kenyon singled and Allie Martinez doubled with two outs. But Bryan picked up a strikeout to get out of the jam.
Glenwood came into the tilt tied with Creston for second in the conference. Bryan picked up her fourth straight shutout in a streak that included a no-hitter against Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln on Monday.
Wittstruck said he liked what he saw from the Titans despite watching their skid against league foes extend to four games. Playing looser was the topic of a team meeting earlier in the week. He saw that in the form of just one error and an aggressive approach at the plate.
“They had fun tonight,” Wittstruck said. “That’s a great ballgame by our defense, McKena threw well and we made some big plays. That’s what we’ve been talking about.”
