Four Millard North students will get the opportunity to showcase their talents and share the stage with professional metro-area musicians on Sunday.
As a part of the Omaha Chamber Music Society’s final summer show, the students will join members of OCMS to play part of Franz Joseph Haydn’s “The Lark.”
Members of the OCMS and the Omaha Symphony have mentored Millard high school ensembles since 2011. The students performing Sunday are Jeffrey Wang and Sheng-Yau Lim on violin, Roger J. Luo on viola and Connor Brown on cello.
Diane Baum, volunteer board member for the OCMS, said the chamber musicians work to further the importance of music as a service. Through its musicians, OCMS has educated youth orchestras around the Omaha area.
“The musicians (in OCMS) believe that these young people are the future,” Baum said. “Not only as performers, but as future audiences members and supporters of orchestra music. They provide intensive coaching for over a year.”
Stacie Haneline, OCMS executive director, said this showcase is the fruition of a six-month clinic full of diligent coaching from OSMS musicians and practice from the Millard North students. Haneline said the four boys were chosen because of their great enthusiasm for chamber music.
“When the clinic finished, they were still playing together and wanted to work together,” Haneline said. “The boys are so gung-ho about performing. We wanted to incorporate that into our summer concert series.”
Along with “The Lark,” the OCMS will perform Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s Piano Quintet in E-flat major and Franz Schubert’s Piano Quintet in A major, better known as the Trout Quintet.
Musicians playing in Sunday’s performance include Juliet Yoshida on violin, Thomas Kluge on viola, Tim Strang on cello; Danielle Meier on bass and Christi Zuniga on piano.
The concert takes place Sunday at 3 p.m. at First Central Congregational Church, 421 S. 36th St. Tickets are $18, or $5 with valid student ID, and may be purchased at the door.
