Expect to hear some new songs when Yonder Mountain String Band takes the stage on Sunday.
As usual, the band likes to try out new material before putting it down on tape. Live shows are where the band thrives. But how many songs?
“A bushel. A handful. It depends on who you ask,” said Dave Johnston. “Some of us would say seven songs. Some would say 27 songs.”
The banjoist said it all depends on what the bluegrass band decides is ready, but that “it's definitely a very fertile time” for the band.
Deciding on a setlist is an ordeal for the band, which has two main rules: “We cannot repeat songs that we played the last time in town. We cannot play tunes that we played the previous night or the previous three or four nights,” said bassist Ben Kaufmann. “In maybe 1,700 shows, I think we've broken them with three songs.”
The band doesn't have fans so much as it has die-hard followers, so the band doesn't want to get repetitive.
We also have plenty of people who have been there the day before, and you can't give them the same show or the same songs,” Johnston added.
